Gitmo a go-go?

The wheels on the bus go round and round…

I ain’t gunna say this, like, totally, like wow!

Where the hell is all this news coming from? PE Obama is getting rid of Gitmo? Actually going to get these men – I think it’s all only men, tried in the US and if they haven’t done anything they will be freed.

Oh-Kay!

There is a lot of chatter and I, for one, would love to see that place closed down – for a multitude of reasons. Will The Patriot Act be next?

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President-elect Barack Obama’s transition team has begun examining what to do with suspected terrorists at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which Obama has pledged to close, an aide said Monday.

The scenario would eliminate the military commissions set up by the Bush administration to prosecute some of the top al Qaeda figures held at the facility, such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed — the lead plotter of the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

The commissions have been delayed for years by legal challenges, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled an earlier version of them unconstitutional in 2006. In a full-page ad in The New York Times on Monday, the American Civil Liberties Union urged Obama to close Guantanamo Bay on his first day in office, “with the stroke of a pen.”

I don’t think I will be able to keep up!

  1. leapsecond says:

The Patriot Act won’t be repealed. Read this: Obama advocates “compromise” for the PATRIOT Act, which means that he will not repeal it, instead choosing to “amend” certain sections so it doesn’t violate AS MANY of our liberties. He is not campaigning for liberty (sorry for invoking images of Ron Paul with that phrase) if he doesn’t get rid of the PATRIOT Act, simple as that.

Plus, what’s disconcerting is that he acknowledges that the P Act gave our law enforcement agencies the “tools” to track down terrorists. What does he mean by that – the ability for the CIA/FBI to break the law whenever they wished in the name of national security?

See – there are things I disagree with re: Mr Obama – that should be rid of post haste!

  3. An American Liberal says:

    Hmm….

First of all, I am a card carrying member of the ACLU, but with respect to these matters, I think Obama giving a bit of ground (showing some compromise) is a prudent maneuver. Dismantling the more troubling elements of the “Act” while still keeping a security blanket for the fearful keeps him squarely in the middle.

As for GITMO, where are we going to intern Rumsfield? I guess the tent city in Arizona will have to do, but bleh, where is the imagery in that scenario? Where is the sense of Cosmic karma wrecking havoc?!

Goodbye GITMO. Surely someone will write “Arbeit Macht Frei” above the gate to cement your place in history. Shameful all around.

By all means, leave your 2 bobs worth
